Richmond Car Donation Title Transfer: What Paperwork You Need

Sign the title over at pickup — the driver handles the rest. Lost title? Heritage for the Blind will help you navigate your state process.

If the title is the only thing slowing down your Richmond car donation, you are not alone. Donors across the Richmond Metro — from The Fan and Church Hill to Short Pump, Midlothian, Henrico, Mechanicsville and Chesterfield — often ask what to do if a title is missing, has a lien, lists a deceased family member, or was issued by another state. RevUp Richmond makes the paperwork simple by connecting your donation with Heritage for the Blind, a real 501(c)(3) charity, EIN 58-2164446. In most cases, you sign the title over at pickup, the tow is free, and the driver brings the donation paperwork. This page explains what documents are usually needed, when to call before scheduling, and how to keep the process moving. Donors who want to check benefit eligibility can also visit nhftb.org/finder for resources such as SSI, LIHEAP, Medicare Extra Help and Section 8.

How the car donation process works

1

Start with the title you have

A clean, current vehicle title is preferred because it lets Heritage for the Blind process your Richmond car donation quickly. If the title is in your name and there are no active liens, you can usually schedule pickup without a DMV visit. Have the title available when the tow driver arrives in Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield or nearby suburbs. The driver will bring the donation paperwork, confirm the vehicle information, and show you where to sign the title over to Heritage for the Blind at pickup.

2

If the title is lost, call before you worry

Lost titles happen, especially with older cars, inherited vehicles, or cars that have been sitting in a driveway. A missing title does not automatically stop the donation. Heritage for the Blind can help you understand the lost-title process for your state and whether the vehicle can move forward while replacement paperwork is being handled. Rules vary by state, so the best next step is to call and explain what you know: your name, vehicle location, VIN if available, and where the title was originally issued.

3

Resolve liens before donation pickup

If a lender, bank, credit union, or finance company is listed on the title, that lien generally must be satisfied before the vehicle can be donated. Contact the lender and ask what is needed to release the title. In many cases, once the loan is paid off, the lender provides a lien release or updated title. Bring that release document to pickup if it is separate from the title. Heritage for the Blind cannot accept a vehicle as a clear donation when another party still has a legal claim to it.

4

Handle names, estates and family vehicles carefully

The person signing the title must have legal authority to transfer the vehicle. If the title is in a spouse’s, parent’s, or relative’s name, do not guess or sign for them. If the titled owner has passed away, you may need probate paperwork, an executor document, small-estate paperwork, or an affidavit of heirship, depending on the state and situation. Heritage for the Blind can tell you what to look for before the tow is scheduled, so Richmond Metro donors can avoid a last-minute paperwork issue at pickup.

5

Out-of-state and no-title vehicles may still qualify

Many Richmond residents have vehicles with titles from Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, New York or another state. Out-of-state titles can often be accepted as long as the ownership is clear and the title can be properly signed over to Heritage for the Blind. Vehicles without titles can sometimes be accepted, depending on age, state rules and documentation. Because no-title situations are case-specific, call before scheduling. If accepted, the driver will still bring the needed pickup paperwork and free towing is included.

Key facts about car donation

Free towing is available throughout the Richmond Metro, including city neighborhoods and nearby Henrico, Chesterfield and Hanover communities.

The title should be signed over to Heritage for the Blind at pickup, not left blank.

A clean title is preferred, but lost-title and no-title situations may still be reviewed.

Any lien must be released by the lender before the donation can usually be completed.

Out-of-state titles are commonly workable when ownership is clear and signatures are correct.

For vehicles over $500, Heritage for the Blind provides IRS Form 1098-C as required.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to go to the DMV after I donate my car in Richmond?
Typically, no DMV visit is required just to complete the donation once the title is properly signed over to Heritage for the Blind at pickup. The tow driver brings the donation paperwork, and you should keep copies for your records. You may still need to follow your state’s separate rules about license plates, insurance cancellation or owner notification, so check local DMV guidance if you are unsure.
What if my Richmond donation vehicle has no title at all?
Call before assuming the vehicle cannot be donated. A clean title is best, but Heritage for the Blind can review certain no-title situations and help you understand what paperwork may be possible in your state. Acceptance depends on the vehicle, age, ownership history and local title rules. Have the VIN, your ID, the vehicle location and any registration or old paperwork handy when you call.
Can I donate a car if the title is in my deceased spouse’s or parent’s name?
Possibly, but you will need the legal authority to transfer it. Depending on the state and the estate situation, that may mean probate documents, executor paperwork, a small-estate form, or an affidavit of heirship. Do not sign the deceased person’s name. Heritage for the Blind can help you identify what may be needed before pickup so the donation does not get delayed at your curb or driveway.
Will Heritage for the Blind help with more than the car donation paperwork?
Yes. RevUp Richmond connects your vehicle donation to Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 58-2164446. In addition to handling donation documentation, Heritage also offers a benefit eligibility finder at nhftb.org/finder for people who want to explore programs such as SSI, LIHEAP, Medicare Extra Help and Section 8. Your vehicle donation includes free towing and the required tax documentation.
