How the car donation process works
Start with the title you have
A clean, current vehicle title is preferred because it lets Heritage for the Blind process your Richmond car donation quickly. If the title is in your name and there are no active liens, you can usually schedule pickup without a DMV visit. Have the title available when the tow driver arrives in Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield or nearby suburbs. The driver will bring the donation paperwork, confirm the vehicle information, and show you where to sign the title over to Heritage for the Blind at pickup.
If the title is lost, call before you worry
Lost titles happen, especially with older cars, inherited vehicles, or cars that have been sitting in a driveway. A missing title does not automatically stop the donation. Heritage for the Blind can help you understand the lost-title process for your state and whether the vehicle can move forward while replacement paperwork is being handled. Rules vary by state, so the best next step is to call and explain what you know: your name, vehicle location, VIN if available, and where the title was originally issued.
Resolve liens before donation pickup
If a lender, bank, credit union, or finance company is listed on the title, that lien generally must be satisfied before the vehicle can be donated. Contact the lender and ask what is needed to release the title. In many cases, once the loan is paid off, the lender provides a lien release or updated title. Bring that release document to pickup if it is separate from the title. Heritage for the Blind cannot accept a vehicle as a clear donation when another party still has a legal claim to it.
Handle names, estates and family vehicles carefully
The person signing the title must have legal authority to transfer the vehicle. If the title is in a spouse’s, parent’s, or relative’s name, do not guess or sign for them. If the titled owner has passed away, you may need probate paperwork, an executor document, small-estate paperwork, or an affidavit of heirship, depending on the state and situation. Heritage for the Blind can tell you what to look for before the tow is scheduled, so Richmond Metro donors can avoid a last-minute paperwork issue at pickup.
Out-of-state and no-title vehicles may still qualify
Many Richmond residents have vehicles with titles from Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, New York or another state. Out-of-state titles can often be accepted as long as the ownership is clear and the title can be properly signed over to Heritage for the Blind. Vehicles without titles can sometimes be accepted, depending on age, state rules and documentation. Because no-title situations are case-specific, call before scheduling. If accepted, the driver will still bring the needed pickup paperwork and free towing is included.
