How the car donation process works
Start your Richmond Metro donation request
Begin by telling RevUp Richmond about the vehicle you want to donate and where it is located. Donors in the Richmond Metro can request free pickup from driveways, apartment lots, repair shops, offices, or other accessible locations in areas like The Fan, Church Hill, Scott’s Addition, Bon Air, Glen Allen, Lakeside, and Colonial Heights. You do not need to understand charity paperwork or resale logistics before you start. The goal is to make the process simple, respectful, and mission-focused from the first call or online form.
Your vehicle is picked up at no cost
After your donation is accepted, a licensed towing partner schedules a convenient pickup window. The tow is free, whether the vehicle is running or not, as long as it can be safely accessed. This matters for mission-minded donors because it removes a common barrier: you can turn an unused vehicle into support for people who are blind or visually impaired without paying for towing, repairs, ads, or private-sale appointments. At pickup, you receive initial documentation for your records while the vehicle moves into the sale process.
The vehicle is sold to create charity proceeds
Once picked up, the vehicle is prepared for sale through an appropriate resale channel. The sale price depends on the vehicle’s condition, age, mileage, market demand, and other standard resale factors, so RevUp Richmond does not promise a specific dollar outcome. What you can know is the charitable direction of the gift: 100-percent of vehicle proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind. That means your Richmond-area donation is converted from an idle car into funding for services connected to the Heritage mission.
Proceeds fund services for blind and visually impaired people
Heritage for the Blind uses vehicle proceeds to support services for people who are blind or visually impaired, including help connecting individuals with government benefit programs. These may include SSI, SSDI, LIHEAP, Section 8 housing assistance, Medicare Extra Help, Medicaid, and other resources that can reduce financial pressure and improve access to support. Donors or community members who want to check potential eligibility for assistance programs can visit nhftb.org/finder. Your donation helps fund the work that connects people with information and pathways to aid.
You receive tax documentation after the sale
Heritage for the Blind is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 58-2164446. Donations to 501(c)(3) charities are generally tax deductible for donors who itemize deductions. For vehicles that sell for more than $500, your deduction is typically based on the gross vehicle sale price, and IRS Form 1098-C is provided for your tax records. You should keep your receipt and consult a qualified tax advisor about your personal situation, but the paperwork is designed to help you document the charitable value of your Richmond donation.
