Here’s how it works for donors in and around Richmond: you call or submit our quick online form, confirm a pickup window that fits your schedule, and then leave the signed title and keys in an agreed safe spot with the vehicle. A local flatbed or hook-and-chain truck picks it up, running or not — even if it’s been sitting awhile. In city neighborhoods like Scott’s Addition or Jackson Ward, pickups are often just a few business days. In outer areas like Mechanicsville, Chesterfield, Glen Allen, or Powhatan, timing depends on routing but is still typically within a few business days. From there, RevUp Richmond handles the sale paperwork, and you receive a tax receipt for your donation.
How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Tell us about your vehicle and location
Share your car’s basics (year, make, model, condition) and where it’s parked in the Richmond area—whether that’s a driveway in Bon Air, an apartment lot in Short Pump, or street parking in The Fan. This lets us match you with a nearby towing partner and estimate how quickly we can reach your exact neighborhood.
2. Choose a pickup day and time window
We’ll offer available windows based on your address and local tow schedules. City locations like Downtown, Carytown, and Northside often have more frequent routes, while rural spots toward Goochland or New Kent may need a bit more lead time. You pick a convenient day and time window so you know roughly when our tow partner will arrive.
3. Sign your Virginia title and prepare your keys
Before pickup, sign your Virginia vehicle title as the seller according to DMV instructions, remove your plates, and gather the keys. If you won’t be home, we’ll agree on a safe place to leave the title and keys with the vehicle—such as in a glovebox, taped inside a windowed envelope, or with an apartment office if allowed.
4. Make sure the tow truck can access your car
Clear any obstacles so a flatbed or hook-and-chain truck can reach your vehicle. In tighter Richmond neighborhoods like Museum District or Oregon Hill, let us know about alleys, one-way streets, or low-clearance garages. In suburbs like Midlothian or Hanover, make sure gates are unlocked and other cars aren’t blocking your driveway or parking space.
5. Hand off the vehicle (you don’t have to be home)
On pickup day, the tow driver will load your vehicle, collect the signed title, and confirm any last details. You do not need to be present if everything is ready and accessible. Once the car is on the truck, your donation is effectively complete, and RevUp Richmond moves ahead with sale and processing on behalf of Heritage for the Blind.
6. Receive your tax receipt from RevUp Richmond
After your car is picked up and processed, you’ll receive a donation acknowledgment for your records. Typically, you’ll get a receipt for at least $500, and if the sale amount is higher, we’ll provide the IRS Form 1098-C details you need to claim the proper charitable deduction at tax time.

Tight Richmond streets, alleys, and low garages
Tip: Areas like The Fan, Jackson Ward, and Oregon Hill can be tricky for full-size flatbeds. Let us know if the car is in an alley, underground garage, or tight courtyard. We’ll plan an appropriate truck and loading approach so the driver can actually reach and safely remove your vehicle on the first visit.
Gated communities, HOA rules, and permit parking
Tip: If you’re in a gated complex in Short Pump, Midlothian, or on-street permit parking zones near VCU, make sure we have gate codes, building names, and any HOA/permit details. Tell your leasing office or HOA a tow truck is coming for a donation so they don’t mistake it for an unauthorized tow and delay the pickup.
Very rural addresses outside core Richmond Metro
Tip: Homes out toward Goochland, New Kent, Powhatan, or farther into rural Hanover often require additional routing time so we can bundle pickups. You’ll still pay $0, but it may take a few more business days. Sharing clear directions or landmarks helps our driver find you faster, especially where GPS or signage is limited.
Missing or incomplete Virginia title at pickup
Tip: Virginia law generally requires a properly assigned title to complete a donation. If you can’t find your title or aren’t sure how to sign it, contact us before scheduling. If at-home pickup is tricky

In some cases, a friend or mechanic can roll the vehicle to street level before our truck arrives, or you might meet a driver at a more accessible spot, like a nearby church or shopping center lot (with permission). If the car is still drivable, you can also arrange to meet our tow partner at a convenient location in the Richmond Metro where loading is safer and simpler.
